The Cell Hunters
As it became clear that we were losing the war, the accumulated knowledge of human cultural history—the very identity of our species—was encapsulated in devices called Eridu Cells. Thousands were made and distributed to every spacecraft in the human fleet. Some ships were sent away secretly, to try and reach safe, hidden locations where our civilization might begin to restore itself. By this time Orcs had almost completely captured the Earth as their own. When they got wind of the Eridu project it infuriated them. Scrapping their original plans to control Earth they set about destroying the planet completely, and issued a bounty on Eridu Cells—and human heads—that sent many a rogue in search of them…
An Eridu Cell is about the size of a large walnut. It’s spherical in appearance, composed of a nearly-indestructible metallic hemisphere, called the cusp, which is bound to a glowing golden-colored orb of light (the arrangement could be compared to an acorn in its cup) called the nucleus. A very, very skilled technologist could in theory separate the nucleus from the cusp and anchor it to (or within) another suitable object, and you know for a fact that at least a few were hidden this way. Mostly, however, they are still found in their original state.
The cusp is made from a mineral called Urukite.
